Wild USOs harvesting with digging sticks replica

Together with Oriol López we have collected wild carrot and chicory and cattail for the reference collection. We have used several wooden digging sticks replica to take the opportunity to check the use-wear marks. The results were presented in 2022 and 2023 EAA Meetings (Kiel and Budapest).

Preparation of replica

Four digging stick replicas made of hazel, yew, pine, and boxwood were prepared and their caracteristics recorded by means of a 3D scanner.

Harvesting of USOs

We used the digging sticks to harvest chicory, wild carrot and cattail. We recorded the time of use and type of soil.

Use-wear study

After use, the use-wear marks and final size of the digging sticks were analyzed.
